Plymouth Superbird
The Plymouth
Superbird can no doubt be identified in a distance due to its protruding,
aerodynamic nosecone and its high-mounted rear wing. It also had a horn which
mimicked the cartoon character “Road Runner”. The nose and the wing, while
being very distinctive, didn’t have any benefits in terms of street use. The benefits
of these could only be experienced at speeds in excess of 97km/h.
Having said
that the Plymouth Superbird was a follow-up version of the Plymouth Road
Runner, with a striking design and heavy modifications. It as primarily
designed for the 1970’s racing season, with its primary rival being the Ford
Torino Talladega.
The
Superbirds came into production in the 1970’s with a 2-door coupe body style
with a FR (Front Rear) layout. Underneath the hood you could find a 426 Hemi V8,
440 Super Commando V8, or even a 440 Super Commando Six Barrel V8. It was also
produced in a 4-speed manual and in a 3 speed automatic Torqueflite 727.
